Wyoming cave projects

Great expectations

Great-X Cave is located in the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming. It is over 1,400 feet deep with a surveyed length of over 6 miles. It is formed in dolomite and has one of the deepest and most difficult through-trips in the US. The upper entrance (Great Entrance) is owned and managed by the National Speleological Society. An effort to resurvey the cave was initiated in 2018 and the survey has progressed from the upper entrance to Connection Falls in the Lost Worland River. Travel to the end of the survey now takes about 5-7 hours.

In addition to Great Expectations Cave, there are several other significant caves on the west side of the Bighorn mountains that are formed in the Bighorn Dolomite. Caves such as La Caverna de los Tres Charros, Bad Medicine and P-Bar (PeBar) are also being resurveyed.
